The Gusi Peace Prize Laureates for 2010

THE Manila-based Gusi Peace Prize Foundation has announced its final selection of 20 distinguished laureates for this year.

The Gusi Peace Prize honors individuals or groups who have contributed significantly toward world peace.

The 2010 Gusi Peace Prize laureates include:
Arnold Foote (Jamaica) for International Diplomacy;
Edwin Eugene "Buzz" Aldrin (USA) for his historic achievements in outer space and Science;
Mary Chinery- Heese (Ghana) for International Diplomacy and Humanitarianism;
Dr. Michael Nobel (Sweden) for Education and Humanitarianism;
Yank Barry (Canada) for Social Services, Philanthropy, and International Humanitarianism; Dr. Art-Ong Jumsai (Thailand) for Scientific Invention and Human Values Education; Prof. Jivko Jelev (Bulgaria) for Scientific Innovation; Mayor General Mahinda Hathurusinghe (Sri Lanka) for Peace Process;
Dr. Philippe Douste-Blazy (France) for Politics, Medicine and International Diplomacy;
Prof. Dr. Irinel Popescu (Romania) for Medicine;
Arne Veidung (Norway) for Scientific Invention and worldwide introduction of the world Medical Card;
Johan Schotte (Switzerland) for

Economics and Philanthropy;
David Plattner (USA) for Environment and Biodiversity;
Prof. Raoul Pariente (France) for Scientific Innovation;
Oliver "Buck" Revell (USA) for International Law Enforcement and Peacekeeping;
Rev. Fr. Rocky Evangelista (Philippines) for Social Services and Humanitarianism; John Lo Seng Chung (China) for Humanitarianism;
Walter Maibaum (USA) for Visual Arts and Art Preservation;
Demetri Argyropoulos (Greece) for Economics and Leadership; and
Dr. Rainer Krell (Italy) for Scientific Innovation in Organic Farming.

Barry Gusi, founder and chairman of the Board of the Gusi Peace Prize, expressed optimism that the Gusi Peace Prize will come to mean similar with the Nobel Prize since it is not only acclaimed but really speaks for humanitarian endeavor and unity of the entire world.

"We will continue to seek, recognize, honor and give pride and dignity to every deserving achiever and peacemaker worldwide as long as we can," Gusi said.

"The Gusi Peace Prize will live on for as long as there is honesty, integrity, sincerity, and good intention among its recipients in helping for human equality in this world. The Gusi Peace Prize will work forever to create a peace and unity in our world and to make our world a better place to live," he added.

The Gusi Peace Prize is awarded by a committee of 21. The board of trustees and the committees have only one year in the position, subject to reappointment.

People of different nationalities could be a part of this foundation by which their willingness is necessary to work for peace and unity.

The Gusi Committee is completely independent. In its assessment of nomination of awards, it receives no instructions or directives.

Among last year’s Gusi Peace Prize laureates were Congressman Bob Filner of California for legislation; Her Royal Highness Raja Datin Fuziah of Malaysia for cultural heritage; Alexey Steele from Russia for visual arts; Dr. Alice Chiu of Hong Kong for social services & philanthropy; Rev. Fr. Joseph A. Faller of the Philippines for divine healing and assistance to the sick & needy; Judge Natividad Mercedes Meza of Paraguay for Social Justice and Humanitarian Law; Dr. Liu Chi Chun of Taiwan for international humanitarianism; Silvia Scherer of Switzerland for biotechnology industry; Dr. Ho Son Fat of Macau for Medicine (Urology) & scientific invention in the field of Neurourology; Lea Salonga of the Philippines for performing arts; Charalambos Lambrou of Cyprus for philanthropy on adult cancer patients; Madam Timi Bakatselos of Greece for philanthropy on children’s health care (cancer advocacy); Maestro Emil-Silviu Ciobota of Romania for performing arts;

Madam Surapee Rojanavongse of Thailand for economics and cultural heritage; Ali Nasuh Mahruki of Turkey for sports & humanitarianism (search & rescue missions): Ambassador Preciosa S. Soliven of the Philippines for academe; Massimo Romagnoli of Italy for international politics and human civil rights; and Dr. Christine Warnke from USA for international humanitarianism.

This year’s Gusi Peace Prize Annual International Awards Night will be held 6 p.m. Nov. 24 at the Philippine International Convention Center.
