P-Noy's New Year's Day message

96th Anniversary of the Iglesia Ni Cristo(INC)

As a young adult, in a period that saw the Filipino nation transiting from more than 300 years of colonial rule, Felix Ysagun Manalo, in search of the truth, drifted from one organization to another. In 1913, he started to preach to whoever would listen. His teachings were embraced by a steadily expanding pool of faithful.

The Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) was formally established on July 27, 1914, within its first chapel in Punta, Santa Ana. Its expansion continued under Minister Manalo and in 1916, he began establishing congregations throughout the country. Even before World War II, the INC had already formed local churches in Mindanao. In 1949, the Iglesia built its first central office and official residence of the Executive Minister on Riverside Street, San Juan, Metro Manila. The congregation grew from approximately 85,000 in 1936 to 200,000 in 1954. By 1970, the INC had about 500,000 members and was established in almost every province in the Philippines.

In the late 1950s, as Minister Manalo’s health started to fail, his son EraƱo de Guzman Manalo began to take on the leadership role under his father’s guidance. When Minister Manalo passed away in 1963, there was no disruption in the church’s activities as his son, popularly called Ka Erdy, took over the duties as Executive Minister.

Shortly after assuming office, Executive Minister EraƱo Manalo began to travel to the various congregations, officiating at worship services, and staging religious rallies. Over the next 30 years, the Iglesia established more than 4,000 locals and 100 districts. The Iglesia became the fastest growing church in the Philippines and it expanded to other countries, beginning with the United States. It started operating its own radio station in 1969. Today, the INC has a 24-hour cable television channel.

By 2008, INC had grown to more than 5,000 congregations in the Philippines and more than 600 abroad. The INC now has local congregations in 89 countries and territories, and its members belonging to 102 nationalities and ethnic groups.

With the passing away of its second Executive Minister, the much loved Manalo, on August 31, 2009, the leadership of the church passed on to his son, Eduardo V. Manalo, who had served as Deputy Executive Minister.

We congratulate the Iglesia ni Cristo led by Executive Minister Eduardo V. Manalo, its leaders and faithful, on the occasion of their 96th Anniversary Tuesday, July 27, 2010. We wish them all the best and success in all their endeavors.

May 3 declared regular holiday

President Arroyo has declared May 3, Monday, as a regular holiday throughout the country for the observance of Labor Day.

Since the law rationalizing the country’s holidays was passed in 2007, the President has opted to follow the provision of the law indicating that the observance of Labor Day would be on the Monday nearest May 1. This allows employees to enjoy yet another long weekend.

“A longer weekend encourages families to get together and strengthen their relationship towards a more productive environment, as well as promotes domestic tourism and enables employers to plan their work schedules effectively and efficiently, resulting in improved productivity, which is achieved whether the holiday falls on a Friday or Monday,” the Proclamation stated.

Under Republic Act 9492, which was enacted on July 24, 2007, Labor Day would be observed on the Monday nearest May 1.

Happy Birthday,Madame President!!!

Born on April 5, 1947, to the ninth President of the Republic of the Philippines, Diosdado P. Macapagal, and the former Dr. Evangelina Macaraeg, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was destined to lead the country like her father did.

A graduate of the Assumption Convent School, finishing her elementary and high school education in 1960 and 1964, in the latter as valedictorian of her class, she proceeded to Georgetown University in the United States to study for her Bachelor of Arts in Economics from 1964 to 1966. She returned to the country to complete the degree at her alma mater, Assumption College, graduating magna cum laude. She subsequently took and completed her Master of Economics at the Ateneo de Manila University and her Doctor of Philosophy of Economics at the University of the Philippines School of Economics.

She joined the faculty of various institutions from the mid 1970s to the late 1980s. These institutions include Ateneo de Manila University, Assumption College, the University of the Philippines School of Economics, Maryknoll College, and St. Scholastica’s College.

She started her public service career in 1987 when she was appointed Assistant Secretary in the Department of Trade and Industry. The following year, she was assigned to hold concurrently the position of Executive Director of the Garments and Textile Export Board. In 1989, she was promoted to Undersecretary of the Department of Trade and Industry, a post she held until she went into elective politics in 1992.

Elected as Senator of the Republic in 1992, she filed and sponsored a number of economic reform bills. Due to her outstanding record as a legislator, she was drafted as the vice-presidential candidate of her party in 1997 and won the vice-presidential elections in 1998. As Vice President, she also held the portfolio of Secretary of Social Welfare and Development and implemented programs that targeted the most vulnerable sectors, providing then assistance to assist them in improving their material welfare.

In 2001, she assumed the presidency after a popular uprising deposed her predecessor.

She ran for election for the presidency in 2004 and won a full-term, a term that will expire on June 30, 2010.

Having steered the nation for close to a decade, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has definitely contributed to maintaining the momentum for economic growth amidst global difficulties.

We greet President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on the occasion of her 63rd Birthday and wish her many more years of good health and success in all her endeavors.

February 22 declared special holiday for schools

It will be a special holiday in all schools on Monday, February 22, as the country commemorates the 24th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution.

Pursuant to Republic Act No. 9492, all holidays except those which are religious in nature, are moved to the nearest Monday unless otherwise modified by law, order or proclamation.

In July last year, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed Proclamation No. 1841 declaring the regular holidays, special (non-working) days, and special holidays (for all schools) for the year 2010.

Under the proclamation, February 22, or the Monday nearest February 25, is a special holiday to serve as an "inspiration to all Filipinos everywhere as we continue to chart our collective course as a nation and as a people."

The country yearly celebrates the February 25, 1986 People Power Revolution which restored basic liberties such as free speech, freedom of assembly, and a free press after 14 years of Martial rule.
