PRESIDENT Arroyo will visit Cebu today to inaugurate the Macapagal-Durano Fish Port in Danao City and to address over 200 delegates from 67 countries for the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UN-WTO) 6th International Tourism Forum in Lapu-Lapu City.
Arroyo is expected to arrive at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport at noon and will proceed to Danao City to unveil the fish port marker. She will be accompanied by Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.
During the program, Danao City Mayor Ramon Durano III will brief officials about the project, which will serve not only Danao fisherfolk but also those from the neighboring municipalities of Compostela, Carmen, Borbon and the Camotes Islands.
The fish port, located in Barangay Poblacion, is said to be a legacy of friendship between Arroyo’s father, the late President Diosdado P. Macapagal, and the late Rep. Ramon “Mano Amon” Durano Sr., Cebu’s 5th district congressman for seven terms.
Mano Amon, who died as incumbent mayor of Danao City on Oct. 24, 1988, was the father of the Danao City Charter and was mainly responsible for the city’s economic
development.
The fish port project has a total cost of P86.4 million, P40 million of which came from the President’s social fund, P35.4 million from the Philippine Fisheries and Development Authority (PFDA) and P11 million from the Danao City Government.
Completed last Sept. 15, the fish port involved the reclamation and road networks, the construction of a pier deck and the Bagsakan building with utilities and site development, including plumbing and electrical systems.
Arroyo will be welcomed in Danao City by Mayor Durano, his son Tourism Secretary Joseph Durano, Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap, City Administrator Thomas Durano and PFDA General Manager Petronilo Buendia.
After the inaugural activities, Arroyo will have lunch at the residence of Mayor Durano, together with Presidential Management Staff (PMS) Director General Cerge Remonde, Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Favila and Governor Garcia.
From Danao City, Arroyo will proceed to the Shangril-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa to deliver the keynote address of the international tourism forum.
The three-day conference will tackle climate change, tourism, women, and poverty reduction through ecotourism initiatives.
Arroyo will be welcomed at the hotel by UN-WTO Secretary General Francesco Frangialli, chief of conference secretariat Dominique Bernadet and Mactan Shangri-la general manager Raymond Bragg.
After her speech, Arroyo will fly back to Manila to prepare for her trip to China tomorrow. (EOB)
