MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE) A retired police officer who was held briefly in Moscow, Russia for allegedly carrying millions of pesos worth of euros has arrived in the country.
Dela Paz, former comptroller for the Philippine National Police, arrived 1:08 p.m. Tuesday via Singapore Airlines and went through normal security procedures.
He declined to make any comment about the controversy he generated when Russian customs officials found him with undeclared millions of pesos worth of euros as he was about to board a plane back to Manila following an Interpol conference last week.
Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno has said that the money was supposedly part of the PNP’s cash advance for the top-level PNP delegation that attended the 77thInterpol Assembly in that country.
De la Paz said he was going to hold a news conference at a restaurant in Green Hills, San Juan at 3:30 p.m.
“Please understand me. I want first to tell my family that I’m all right” he told reporters before being rushed to the VIP Room of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
Before the arrival of Dela Paz, Angel Atutubo, assistant general for security at the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), said that no special treatment would be given to Dela Paz, Zamboanga Peninsula regional director Jaime Caringal, and their wives.
In a phone interview, Atutubo said that Dela Paz and Caringal and their wives would be treated as "normal passengers" who would be required to undergo security procedures at the airport.
" [Security here is okay]. Everything is normal," he said.
