Tuesday's cabinet meeting resolved to postpone the holding of the ASEAN summit to March 2009 due to continued occupation of Suvarnabhumi Airport by the People's Alliance for Democracy.
Government spokesman Natthawut Saikua said the cabinet agreed to Foreign Minister Sompong Amornvivat's proposal to postpone the ASEAN+6 summit, originally scheduled to take place between December 15-18 in Chiang Mai. The decision came about because closure of the two Bangkok airports created uncertainty over the amount of time available to prepare for the summit and worried participant countries.
The cabinet has told the ministry of foreign affairs to officially inform participating countries and organisations, said Mr Natthawut. The cabinet's earlier announcement for December 15-18 to be public holidays in Chiang Mai city has been canceled.
